3 Reasons You Don’t Get Hired (And How to Overcome Them) [Part 1 of 3]
Interviewing without receiving an offer in the end can be extremely discouraging, and it may be difficult to know what exactly went wrong. In our years of experience, we have seen how common mistakes can ruin a candidate’s chances of getting hired. Below are 3 of the many reasons we see candidates don’t get the job.
Not Researching the Company
In our experience we have found that failing to research a company before the interview can severely hurt your chances of getting hired. It’s important to go into an interview with a good idea of the company’s history, vision and culture, competition in the market, and any current events that might have an impact on the business. Employers want to know that you are interested in working for them, and coming prepared with this knowledge can be a great way to show that you are serious about your desire to work for them.
Discrepancies or Inaccuracies on Resume
A common red flag for employers is inconsistency on a resume. Your job history and contact information should be the same on your resume, LinkedIN profile, and job application. Even if it’s an honest mistake, employers may assume you are reporting false information on purpose. Mistakes on a resume could also reflect poorly on your professionalism as well as raise suspicions about your character. According to an HR Statistics Report, 80.4% of resume errors come from mistakes in former job experience. Always make sure your information is correct and up to date, ensuring that all details such as dates and locations are reported accurately.
Talking Too Much or Too Little
It’s important to strike a good balance during an interview so as not to talk too much or too little. Employers could easily lose interest in a candidate who rambles or gets sidetracked and goes off on tangents. Interviewers could also lose interest if you don’t provide a long enough answer to sufficiently address their question. Giving short or inadequate answers could mean you are not well prepared for the interview. Try to focus on the question and answer in a way that showcases your skills as a candidate. Don’t try to fill silences while an interviewer is processing or taking notes. Being patient during silences will show that you are confident in your answers. Perhaps the best way to ensure you talk just the right amount during an interview is to practice and prepare ahead of time.
