4 Ways to Fill in Resume Gaps
There are many reasons why one might have a gap on their resume. Although, that gap can potentially cause issues when one is applying at their next job.
If you find yourself without employment and trying to explain resume gaps, check out these 4 solutions on how to handle it:
- Do charity work. Charity work is a great addition to a gap in a resume. Charities, even the top ones, are always looking for new volunteers. You can gain new job skills in software, management, event planning and more just by volunteering. Also, during your next job interview, you will have a great story to tell about helping people in your community.
- Take a short term contract job. Short term contract positions can build your resume by teaching you new skills and gaining more experience. Great contracting positions are fairly easy to find in the current job market. Contract positions also show a future employer that you are flexible. In many contract roles, you need to be very flexible, especially when filling in on a short term basis. Due to the current market, a high percentage of temporary positions convert in to direct hire roles.
- Get a certification or go back to school. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, 5.2 million jobs are currently unfilled in the market. This is mainly due to the lack of training or certifications in a specific job area. Certifications in Microsoft Office, Cisco, Google, and Foreign Language are all desired in the current job market. Companies are expecting to hire candidates who are trained and ready to hit the ground running on day 1. Companies will often pay very good salaries to trained professional workers. You will have many more opportunities in the job market with new skills.
- Start a small business and do consulting for friends. One can start a small business for a very nominal fee. It can be a great way to do consulting work for friends and family. Not only are you making a profit off of your small business, but expenses can be written off which will save money on your taxes.
