New Record- 27.5 days to fill a job
Why it takes employers a record 27.5 days to fill a job
It is officially a candidate’s job market again. Many employers who are looking to fill open positions are finding it much more challenging to hire, with offer turn downs and no-shows for interviews becoming very common. In fact, it now takes an average of 27.5 days to fill an open position, according to DHI Group/ Dice.com. This is higher than in the booming economy of 2007, where the average was 21.4 days.
Here are a few factors that influence the job market:
An estimated 53 million Americans—more than 1 in 3 workers—are freelancers, according to a 2014 report by independent research firm Edelman Berland. Many employees enjoy working on these freelancing opportunities, because of the flexible schedule and ability to work anywhere. If people can freelance for a living, their desire for a 9 to 5 job decreases. According to AARP, 10,000 baby boomers will turn 65 each day for the next 18 years. Many of these highly trained, experienced workers will be retiring or reducing hours to part time. Couple this with the lowest labor participation rates since the mid 1970’s from workers at all levels and you have a clear shortage of available workers with the proper experience and training.
